The stitchbird (hihi) Is another New Zealand bird no longer found on the mainland. The remaining birds (somewhere between 500 and 1000 individuals) are restricted to pest free offshore sanctuaries.  Stitchbirds are  members of the honey eater family, which also consists of the bellbird and tui.
