”The sheer beauty of the huia, and its importance as a sacred icon, make this one of New Zealand's best known extinct birds” – Alan Tennyson
The female had a much longer down- curved beak than the male which is the biggest difference in sexes than any other bird species. The name huia is derived from the birds early morning call- ‘a strange, deep, melodious whistling call.’
