The female had a much longer down- curved beak than the male which is the biggest difference in sexes than any other bird species. The name huia is derived from the birds early morning call- ‘a strange, deep, melodious whistling call.’

My great grandfather was one of the last people to have seen huia in the Rangatikei area.
