The New Zealand falcon (karearea)
is an acutely threatened species, but it still can be seen in most
major mountain ranges around the country. Karearea is a fast and
fearless predator, capable of taking prey up to 6 times its own
bodyweight. Because of its ground nesting habits, this raptor is
extremely vulnerable to nocturnal pests such as possums and stoats,
which is one of the main reasons its numbers are declining. New
Zealand once had seven Birds of prey, but now only has three.
The karearea graces the New
Zealand $20 note. |
