Welcome to the world of

Like the extinct huia, and the rare tieke, the North Island kokako is a member of the wattlebird family. Its electric blue facial wattles and haunting song make this bird very special to New Zealanders, especially to those lucky enough to see it in the wild. The now extinct South island kokako was a subspecies, the only difference was the South island bird had bright orange wattles instead of blue.

The kokako graces the New Zealand $50 note.
