The Idea drawing a series of native and extinct New Zealand birds came to me at the end of my Canadian OE. I had a lot of time to sit and draw during the harsh winter months so I began experimenting with a North American / New Zealand mix, which led to the first bird in the series, the New Zealand falcon. When I got home to NZ I decided to go on a road trip in search of some new inspiration. This came in the form of the rare and beautiful Saddlebacks on Stewart island, after which I created the three wattlebirds. Tieke, kokako and huia. And from then on I just kept going. I have a goal to complete 20 birds by the end of 2007 |
