The New Zealand raven was extinct before Europeans arrived in New Zealand. Not much is known about this bird except it lived mainly near the coast and fed on flax snails. The Chatham Island subspecies is thought to have been the fourth largest songbird in the world. Ravens throughout the globe are renowned for their intelligence so it is unclear why the New Zealand species met an early demise.
