The Blue duck (whio) is a white water champion, spending most of its life on fast flowing mountain rivers and streams. Yet its future is uncertain, forest clearing and introduced pests have forced the birds to live only in the remotest areas of New Zealand. The name Whio is derived form its plaintive call.
