Huia Pair

Sam Clark

The Huia is a very famous example of what we stand to lose when we do not value our unique natural heritage. They were all hunted to extinction following a fashion trend that created a demand for the beautiful tail feathers. My great grandfather saw what must have been one of the last Huia birds near Hunterville around 1905, the last official recorded sighting was not far away in the Tararua ranges in December 1907. One of the unique features of Huia was the difference in bill length between males and females (females had the longer one).
