Kokako Pair

I was lucky to go into the Te Urewera mountains with the DOC rangers to help catch some Kokako birds that they needed to relocate to the Boundary Stream Mainland island in the Hawkes Bay. We set up large 'mist' nets in the trees and played Kokako song recordings while we hid in the undergrowth. It didn't take long for the curious birds to come swooping in and tangling themselves in our net. To calm them down while we attached transmitters we would hand feed them a banana! Such an amazing experience that made me really appreciate how amazing these creatures are.
