Tieke Pair

Sam Clark

Tieke/Saddleback are such energetic birds, always hopping from branch to branch, they don't do a lot of open air flying. I have seen Saddleback in several different places now, on Ulva island, Kapiti island, Whale island and at the Zealandia reserve in Wellington. It would be so awesome to see these birds surviving on the mainland in my lifetime, but they are one of the most susceptible to mammalian predators due to their habits of feeding on the ground and nesting in tree holes. There are some excellent organisations such as 'Halo' in Whakatane who are striving to achieve this goal, they have even used my design for their logo!
